Captain William Harrison was the Captain of the great Iron Ship: The Great Eastern.
Built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and propelled in January 1858, the ship was dogged by misfortune. This was surely a sign of things to come…..
: Her actual launch took three months and pushed the cost of the ship to astronomic proportions, such that the ship had to wait two years for its maiden voyage. Built to such huge proportions to make the England to Australia run with as few stops as possible, its maiden voyage was to New York, with about 230 passengers aboard, even though she could hold almost 4,000!
Alas Bad luck followed the ship, on her fourth trip across the Atlantic she got caught up in a horrendous storm which broke her rudder and she had to drift for three days, until repairs could be made. In 1862 the ship carried its record amount of paying passengers, and tore a gash in her hull; she stayed afloat thanks to her double hull. After these and other mishaps, the Great Eastern spent the remainder of its life as a cable laying ship.
Captain Harrison was a close companion of the great Brunel and of course captain of the greatest ship of its time yet it was on a course of duty concerning the Great Eastern that the Captain left his ship docked at Southampton and set sail in a small vessel towards the dock….. He was never to reach it alive it capsized and along with the purser’s son and coxswain the came to their end on what should have been a mundane exercise.
He is buried in St. James, his monument, desecrated by vandals is on the part known affectionately as ‘The Chessboard’ it is said that the old Capt. roams the gardens of St. James.
